Located on the eastern fringes of the city centre, The Gateway is the largest development in Leeds. Built on what is essentially a large traffic island, it's a huge mixed-used complex with hundreds of apartments, a bar, offices, a gym and a large hotel. The sheer scale of the development is quite daunting, so the architects have designed a wide range of styles, which have helped to break up what could have otherwise been a hulking monstrosity. The 15-storey tower on the north-side is elegant, the steel-clad blocks on the east-side are handsome and the green curved block on the south-side is one of our favourite pieces of contemporary architecture in Leeds. Such density of living doesn't suit everyone, but the communal spaces are nicely designed and the wide range of on-site facilities means you can eat, drink, shop and exercise without ever leaving the traffic island!
