MANCHESTER'S TOP 10 CHIPPIES
FROM LATE NIGHT CHIPPIES IN CANAL STREET TO UPMARKET LUNCHTIME CAFES IN LLOYD STREET, LUVTHECITY REVEALS MANCHESTER'S SCRUMMIEST CHIPPIES
1. Kingfisher
43 Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1LX
Located in the heart of the Northern Quarter, Kingfisher tops the list of our favourite chippys in Manchester. It's got the lot; 1970s Formica tables and chairs, stainless steel counters, vinyl flooring, yellow & white decor with matching tabards for the staff and the best-tasting chips in town. When we last visited, we were given the last batch of the fry and when they'd cooked some new chips, we got those for free - PLUS some bread & butter. Perfection!
2. Portland Plaice
88 Portland Street, M1 4GX
One of the few authentic daytime chippys left in the city centre, Portland Plaice does a roaring trade and it's easy to see why. They've got some great pies, lots of big fat fish and the largest chip barms in Manchester. If the sun's out you can take your lunch to nearby Sackville Gardens, or if it's raining there is a large Formica-strewn seating area at the back. And if you fancy a quick pint with your chips, Portland Plaice is next door to one of our favourite pubs in town, the glorious Circus Tavern
3. Maxwells Chippy
31 Bloom Street, M1 3JE
Serving the gay village for over 20 years, Maxwells is the best late-night chippy in town. At 2am on a Sunday morning there is no better place to be than sat on the front step, scoffing a portion of £1 chips with Maxwells' yummy curry sauce. You have to beg for red sauce and they're not too generous with the salt n' vinegar either - but we wouldn't have it any other way.
4. Fish Hut
27 Liverpool Road, Manchester, M3 4NW
Britain may have been gripped by one of the worse recessions in recent memory, but Fish Hut still manages to survive by opening for just a few hours a day. This is pretty frustrating considering it's one of the best chippys in Manchester. Located at the top of Liverpool Road, just off Deansgate, this well-loved chippy has great food, decent prices and the smiliest staff in town. And if you ask nicely they'll let you sit down in the rarely-used first floor restaurant, complete with rickety wooden tables and mis-matched cutlery - we love it!
5. Cafe Lloyd
16 Lloyd Street, Manchester, M2 5ND
Cafe Lloyd isn't strictly a chippy, but we've included it in our top chippys because it's one of the few places in town that serves fish'n'chips at lunchtime. The building is beautiful, the interior is lovely and the service is great. Ask for bread and butter on the side and you'll have one of the finest lunches in Manchester
6. Tony's Chippy
3 Piercy Street, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 7HY
It's not exactly in the city centre, but we've put Tony's at No.5 in our list of top chippys because it's pretty difficult to beat. If you live anywhere on the east side of town it's worth making that extra journey down Great Ancoats Street, up Old Mill Street and over to Tony's where you'll find a busy takeaway and a sit-down restaurant next door. They serve fat juicy chips and those lovely Holland's Steak & Ale pies
7. McTucky's
40 Sackville Street, Manchester, M1 3WA
McTucky's isn't a tradtional fish'n'chip shop, so we shouldn't really put it in our top 10 chippys, but this place is the stuff of legends, and nowhere does a better chicken burger at 3am. Rubbish takeaways come and go, but McTucky's has stayed the same for decades, and it's popularity shows. And in all the years we've been going here, we've never had a duff burger (fingers crossed)
8. Cuddly Cod
27 Cottenham Lane, Salford, M7 1TW
Another chippy on the outskirts of town, the Cuddly Codd is located in the middle of a Salford industrial estate, so you may want consider taking the car rather than attempt to find it on foot. But once you've got your chips, you can walk west down Cottenham Lane and scoff your chips on the bridge over the River Irwell... like Rita Tushingham may have done in
A Taste of Honey (IMDB it!)
9. Chungs Chippy
19 Oldfield Road, Salford, M5 4NE
We didn't intend to include Chinese Takeways that 'do chips too', but this lovely old takeaway has been faithful to Salford for over 30 years and the chips are some of the best we've had. Located a few minutes west of the city centre, the outside may look a little grubby with its 1970s polished tiles and rundown bus stop, but don't let this put you off. The food is tasty, clean and cheap - and there isn't a good alternative for miles
10. Pete's Chippy
26 Swan Street, Manchester, M4 5JQ
Pete's has been serving lovely chips to the hungry people of east Manchester for decades, and its popularity never wains. It serves great chips, lovely pies, big saveloys (ooh mumma!) and mushy peas too. If the weather isn't too bad, we suggest grabbing your chips and eating them on the low brick wall in Coop Street opposite, it's one of the quietest spots in town
AND ONE FOR THE ROAD...
Armstrong's
486 Bury Old Road, Prestwich, Manchester, M25 1NL
We think Armstrongs is the BEST chippy in Greater Manchester, so it's well worth the 15-minute drive up Bury Old Road and into Prestwich. The place is crisp and clean, the staff are smiley and happy and it serves the biggest portions of chips we've ever seen. The Jumbo Cod may cost over £5, but it can feed four people if you get a couple of extra bags of chips. Armstrong's serves Mushy Peas and Beans on the side, plus cold drinks, barm cakes and best of all...Curly Wurlys!
