Mid-century in Manchester For the redesign of this apartment in the Art Deco former Burton's Menswear headquarters in Manchester, MGID looked to the period of the building and the modern, internationalist style of great collectors such as Yves St Laurent, Pierre Bergé and Givenchy. Graphic, striking mid-century pieces provided the bulk of the furnishings, complementing but not overpowering the owner's art collection, which spans the 18th century to the 20th, and includes artists such as Cocteau, Derain and Caziel. The large living space was divided by large glass doors to create a new dining room/library lined with bookcases. The Burton Building symbolises everything that the Northern Quarter is about; progressive design mixed with a gritty but exciting location. It's a mixed bag architecturally, with a good quality historic conversion overlooking Oldham Street and a Brutalist concrete structure at the rear - but both are well-designed and great value too. The apartments at the rear of the building have large covered terraces with quiet views across deserted car parks. It's gritty, but we love it!
