Mann Island is the most daring and controversial piece of contemporary residential architecure in Liverpool - it makes One Park West and Rumford Place look positively staid. On paper the design looks like something out of Blakes Seven (that's a 1970s sci-fi drama if you under the age of 30!) but in practise it seems to fit in its location much better than we had expected. The large black-glass triangular design is pretty startling at first sight but we think its exactly what a historic site such as this needs, a little excitement and a spot of controversy. The 376 apartments will all be finished to a high-standard and the developer claims a number of high-profile residents, but once the hyperbole has calmed down we wonder how liveable these high-end apartments will be - after all only a few have outside spaces and the Strand has always been a busy and noisy barrier to the city centre. Still, we've given it a 9/10 Luvthecity Rating in March 2010 and we'll keep an eye on how the building progresses...
